Harlequin Duck
Histrionicus histrionicus
Synopsis:
Local breeder along rushing mountain streams in the northern and
central Oregon Cascades, and at one Coast Range
location (1994-96, Upper Nestucca River). No sightings were reported from
northeastern Oregon, where it bred until at least 1935.
Habitat Associations:
some
Western Oregon Riverine Woodland (25 acres)
Relative Detectability:
Fairly easy to spot and to confirm nesting, usually by
noting fledglings accompanied by adults.
Challenge:
Determine if species has disappeared from southern Cascades.
